Trump Blames Iran War, Rising Fuel Prices for Republicans’ Midterm Defeat

United States President Donald Trump has attributed the Republican Party’s defeat in the 2026 midterm elections to the economic consequences of the Iran war, rising gasoline prices and other political factors, following the Democrats’ victory in both chambers of Congress.

Trump made the remarks during an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, where he acknowledged that although many Americans supported his decision to take military action against Iran, voters were unwilling to bear the immediate economic consequences, particularly higher fuel costs.

“People agree with what I’m doing on Iran but they probably weren’t willing to do the short the early consequence of paying more for gasoline,” he said.

The president’s comments came a day after Democrats recorded significant victories across the country, wresting control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate from the Republicans.

The outcome represents a major political setback for Trump’s administration and is expected to complicate his legislative agenda during the remaining two years of his presidency.

Trump, however, maintained that the electoral setback should not be interpreted as a rejection of his leadership.

He had earlier congratulated the Democrats on their victories, acknowledging their performance in an election that saw several traditionally Republican states swing in favour of the opposition party.

The president also pointed to his absence from the ballot as another factor that contributed to the Republican Party’s poor performance, suggesting that the outcome would have been different if he had personally contested the election.

In a separate reaction, Trump claimed that Republicans would have secured a landslide victory had his name appeared on the ballot.

He also criticised the performance of some Republican candidates, arguing that they failed to inspire enough supporters to turn out and vote.

The president further acknowledged that Democrats had campaigned effectively, while expressing dissatisfaction with the media attention given to opposition candidates during the election period.

The 2026 midterm elections have delivered a significant shift in the balance of political power in Washington, with Democrats securing control of both chambers of Congress.

The victory gives the opposition party greater authority over congressional proceedings, investigations and legislative oversight, while providing it with substantial leverage over Trump’s policy proposals and government appointments.

The results also expose the political challenges confronting the Republican Party as it approaches the final two years of Trump’s second presidential term.

With Democrats now positioned to exercise greater influence in Congress, the administration faces the prospect of increased scrutiny and resistance to key aspects of its domestic and foreign policy agenda.
